Illinoisans love coming up with conspiracy theories, and here are five that have hung on for quite some time. From urban legends to old wives' tales, this list has events that may be happening in your own backyard. Scroll on for more details.
1. Grassy Lake UFO
Beginning in 1973, reports of sightings of glowing orange lights appearing over a lake at Chain O'Lakes started coming into the police station. It eventually became too much for the police to handle, and they stopped responding. The reports then increased to the sounds of scratching, sinister shadows, and knocking. A New Age group came to town and attempted to communicate with this strange force. The police never figured out what was causing the strange reportings.
2. Bigfoot
In Illinois, Bigfoot is also known as the Big Muddy Monster. This creature is tall with white hair but is caked with so much mud he looks brown. The first sighting was in 1973, and it set off a frenzy of possible sightings that took the media world by storm.
3. Homey The Clown
In 1991, there were rumored sightings of a man dressed as a clown going around in a white van trying to kidnap children. People believed he was a rapist and murderer but no hard evidence was ever found to prove he existed. Reports expressed that he was dressed like Homey the Clown, a character from the TV show In Living Color.
4. Resurrection Mary
Legend has it that men who drive down Archer Avenue near Resurrection Cemetery will see a female hitchhiker. If picked up, she will ask to be let out at the cemetery and will disappear inside. It is believed that a woman was murdered in a hit and run in the 1930s and that her spirit lives on.
5. Crop Circles
Though the first crop circle was created and discovered in England in the late 1970s, they have since popped up all around the world, especially in the Midwest, where there are many cornfields. Many believe these to be UFO landings to this day even though it has been proven that these designs are all man-made.
