Crossing This 127-Year-Old Bridge In Georgia Is Like Walking Through History
Bridges have been around for thousands of years, but every time I cross one, I'm struck by how cool they really are. They allow us to briefly defy gravity and cross over land or water that would not otherwise be able to be traversed. It's a pretty cool feat of engineering! There are lots of great bridges in Georgia, with some pretty cool historic bridges, covered bridges, truss bridges, swinging bridges, and more located all over the state. One that's particularly neat thanks to both its design and longevity is the Elder Mill Covered Bridge in Watkinsville, not too far from Athens. This is a beautiful bridge to visit at any time of year, and it feels like a step back in time. Check it out:
Watkinsville is a fast-growing town of about 3,000 located just outside of Athens. It's a lovely place with a ton of history.
One great place to experience a bit of that history is the Elder Mill Covered Bridge, which spans Rose Creek.
The bridge was moved here in 1924, but it was originally built in 1897 over nearby Calls Creek.
It's one of 13 functional covered bridges in Georgia.
Whether you visit in the green of spring, when it's surrounded by stunning fall foliage, or when it's decked out in Christmas lights, this is a scenic place that looks straight out of a postcard.
The bridge spans 99 feet and is a Town lattice truss covered bridge.
This is one of the prettiest covered bridges in Georgia, and definitely worth a visit if you're interested in bridges.
