10 Unique Trivia Facts About Georgia You Might Not Have Heard Before
There's so much fascinating history in Georgia - we are a pretty old state, after all! We've got a lot of famous firsts and we're tops in the country in quite a few things. 1. Georgia is approximately 67% forested.
2. Georgia has the second-most number of counties of any state.
We have 159 counties, second only to Texas (which has 254).
3. Georgia was home to the country's first gold rush.
The later California Gold Rush may have been far more famous, but the first gold rush in the United States
actually took place near Dahlonega, GA in 1829. Thousands came to this small town seeking their fortune.
4. Georgia had no governor for the first 20 years of its existence.
While James Oglethorpe was the colony's unofficial governor, the colony was technically managed by a group of trustees that operated out of London.
5. There are 71 streets with variations of "Peachtree" in the name in Atlanta.
6. There is a tree in Athens that owns itself.
According to legend, the Tree That Owns Itself was granted ownership of itself by Colonial William Henry Jackson, the original property owner. In actuality, it's unlikely that this could stand up in a court of law and it's possible the entire story is just an urban legend, but in any event, the tree is a popular landmark in Athens.
7. Atlanta is home to the world's largest drive-in restaurant.
The Varsity takes up two city blocks and can accommodate 800 diners.
8. Despite being the Peach State, Georgia produces more peanuts (and pecans, cotton, watermelon, blueberries, and cantaloupes) than peaches.
California is actually the country's largest peach producer.
9. Georgia has no major natural lakes.
10. Georgia is home to the world's largest college.
Berry College is massive and also incredibly beautiful. It has more than 27,000 acres, making it by far the largest contiguous college campus in the world.
