The Native American Burial Site Found In Georgia Is A Historical Wonder

Kolomoki Mounds State Park in Georgia offers a rich historical experience with ancient mounds and various outdoor activities.

With family members and friends visiting Georgia over the holidays, it is only right that you show them some of the best places our great state has to offer. While we absolutely recommend taking them to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens for the famed Garden Lights, Holiday Nights exhibit, we also recommend something with a bit more history. Not only is this outdoor adventure a beautiful sight to see, but it also has a rich and fascinating history for all to enjoy.

One of the most fascinating discoveries ever made in Georgia has a history that you have to see to believe.

Kolomoki Mounds State Park in Blakely, Georgia is one of the most historically significant parks in the state of Georgia due to the housing of the oldest and largest Woodland Indian site in the southeastern United States.

When the Kolomoki Mounds were discovered and researched, it was found that Indians occupied the area from 350 to 750 A.D.

The highlight of the state park is the oldest temple mound in Georgia which guests are able to climb to the top of, clocking in at almost 60-feet in height.

This gargantuan mound has two smaller burial mounds nearby, as well as additional ceremonial mounds, too.

Even the park’s museum is built around one of the excavated mounds, providing visitors with a chance to really see how the Indians lived and survived.

Beyond just the fascinating history of these mounds, guests to Kolomoki Mounds can also enjoy the lakes nearby for fishing and boating, plus the scenic hiking trails, too.

Kids of all ages enjoy a trip to the mounds — whether it be climbing to the top, or enjoying the various artifacts that have been uncovered in the area.

The next time you're looking for an outdoor activity that the family can enjoy together, check out Kolomoki Mounds State Park for a quick and rewarding trip back in time.
