The First Wawa Locations Have Opened in Georgia and We Couldn’t Be More Excited
Fans of this northeast convenience store were eagerly wondering when Wawa would open in Georgia. As of 2024, the wait is over.
I'm a southerner through and through, but I can certainly admit when other regions of the country get things right. One site that's commonplace in the Northeast but not much less so down here in our neck of the woods is Wawa. This beloved pitstop is so much more than just a convenience store or [gasp!] a gas station. I know, I know: Folks are going to light me up, extolling the long lists of the virtues of places like Buc-ee's and Sheatz. They have rabid fan bases, and don't get me wrong: They're great, but if I'm on a trip and see a Wawa coming up, I'm going to pull over. Period. Once, when a friend from New Jersey visited me for a weekend in the Peach State, I was glad to see her—but I was even more glad to see the entire bag of Wawa pretzels she brought along with her (thank you, Kim!). If you're like me and understand the appeal of this not-just-a-gas-station destination, you'll be thrilled to know that as of the end of 2024, we now have multiple Wawa locations in Georgia. Is there a Georgia Wawa in your part of the state? Let's check it out.
Wawa got its start in Philadelphia back in 1964. Today, there are more than 1,000 Wawa locations nationwide, mostly in the Northeast, though Alabama and Florida both already had operating locations before the first Wawa opened in Georgia. Wawa is the type of business that inspires fanatical loyalty from its shoppers, much like other popular retailers, such as Trader Joe's and Buc-ee's.
Sure, you can pick up traditional convenience store snacks like chips and fruit here. And, of course, there's an array of coffee and coffee-adjacent products to help you stay awake through those long hours on the road. You'll also find a good variety of other tasty eats, like sandwiches, pizza, and plenty more. The food here is of much higher quality than what you'd typically expect from a gas station, but with the added benefit of reasonable prices.
So when and where did Wawa open in Georgia? The first two stores opened in the charming towns of Brunswick and Jesup toward the end of 2024. Since then, additional locations have opened their doors in Bainbridge, Waycross, Hinesville, and just outside of Savannah in Pooler. Expect to see stores in Albany and Valdosta in the near future. In all, Wawa is expecting to open around 26 new stores in the Peach State over the next few years.

Of course, a great convenience store is just one tiny part of making sure you have a safe and successful road trip. Make sure to check out our Road Trip Essentials packing list before you hit the highway on your next journey!
