This Remote Small Town In Georgia Is The Perfect Place To Get Away From It All
South Georgia doesn't get a ton of love. Many travelers, and even lifetime residents, have a tendency to act like the state line ends a little south of Savannah. While it has a population of 13,000 and is one of the larger cities in the region, it's fairly remote and dwarfed by the cities farther north. There's a lot to love about Waycross, GA. The city is the county seat of tiny Ware County. There are two historic districts here. When the city was first settled in 1820, it went through several names before Way Cross was settled on.
The name comes from the fact that it's the point where six different rail lines meet. The name was later shortened to a single word.
One of the most notable things to do in Waycross, GA is to visit the Okefenokee Swamp. This incredible 438,000-acre wetland is considered one of the natural wonders of Georgia.
It's the largest blackwater swamp in North America and such a unique ecosystem.
