7 Florida Tourist Spots I Tried to Hate (But Ended Up Loving)

These seven unexpected Florida gems prove that sometimes the spots you’re skeptical about turn out to be the most memorable — from lively streets to serene beaches and curious roadside attractions.

It's hard not to think of Florida and immediately think of tourism. The Sunshine State brings in around 140 million visitors annually, most of whom are domestic travelers. Living in South Florida all my life, I've seen my fair share of tourists coming to enjoy the state, and rightly so. We've got so much to offer! In fact, it piqued my curiosity over the years about what must-see attractions in Florida were actually tourist traps or truly worth the hype. Here are my top 7 tourist spots in Florida that I tried to hate, but really just ended up making me love my home state even more.

1. Tarpon Springs

alt

Often overlooked, Tarpon Springs is a slice of Greek culture on Florida’s Gulf Coast. And if you know me, you already know I'm all about the Greek culture! Famous for its sponge docks, this charming town offers waterfront dining, artisanal shops, and the chance to learn about sponge harvesting firsthand. Wander the historic district, sample authentic baklava, and soak up the vibrant Mediterranean flair that makes Tarpon Springs feel worlds away.

2. Universal Studios

alt

It’s easy to roll your eyes at the idea of another mega theme park, but Universal Studios delivers thrills with style. From heart-pounding rides like The Incredible Hulk Coaster (a personal favorite) to immersive experiences in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the park combines cutting-edge technology with cinematic magic. Even non-roller-coaster lovers can enjoy live shows, themed dining, and interactive attractions that make it an unforgettable day.

3. Coral Castle

alt

A true labor of love, Coral Castle is an architectural mystery in the subtropical Florida landscape. Built entirely by one man, Edward Leedskalnin, from massive coral blocks, the site showcases creative sculptures, furniture, and even a nine-ton gate that mysteriously moves with a touch. Visiting Coral Castle is like stepping into a whimsical world where art, ingenuity, and curiosity collide; it's definitely worth the detour south of Miami.

4. Siesta Key Beach

alt

White sand so soft it squeaks beneath your feet—that’s Siesta Key Beach in a nutshell. It's not overrated at all. There is a reason why it's always ranked so high as one of the best beaches in Florida! This Gulf Coast gem offers crystal-clear waters, spectacular sunsets, and a laid-back vibe perfect for families or solo sun-seekers. Its powdery sand, shaded picnic areas, and nearby shops and eateries make it a perfect spot for a full day of seaside bliss.

5. Duval Street

alt

Duval Street is where the heart of Key West beats loudest. Lined with lively bars, quirky shops, and historic homes, it’s a pedestrian paradise full of character. From sunrise to sunset, there’s always something happening, whether street performers, live music, or a constant buzz that captures the island’s playful spirit. A stroll down Duval is an experience in itself, blending culture, nightlife, and the laid-back Key West lifestyle.

6. Little Havana

alt

Step into Little Havana, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to Cuba. Colorful murals, lively street music, and the aroma of fresh Cuban coffee fill the air. Calle Ocho, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, is perfect for exploring art galleries, sampling authentic cuisine, and watching locals play dominoes in Maximo Gomez Park. It’s an immersive experience celebrating Miami’s Cuban heritage.

7. 30A

alt

Florida’s scenic Highway 30A winds along the Emerald Coast, linking charming beach towns, hidden coastal trails, and sugar-white sand beaches. From bike-friendly Seaside to the artsy vibes of Grayton Beach, 30A offers a perfect blend of relaxation, local culture, and stunning Gulf Coast views — making it a must-drive for anyone seeking a quintessential Florida getaway. So many people write 30A off simply because it isn't far enough south, but I can safely say: you're missing out.
