Fort Delaware was very significant in the Civil War, so there are many photos from the mid 1800s. This photo dates to the 1860s.

These Fort Delaware soldiers posed for a photo all the way back in 1864! Back then, photography was a whole process and this exposure must have taken several seconds... at least.

Just about the only ones who were happy at Fort Delaware were the officers - seen here in 1863.

The site was known to be an absolute hell for those stationed and imprisoned here.
