9 Unwritten Rules Every Northern Californian Lives By ‘Til Death

Some rules aren't necessarily written into law here in California, but we NorCal folks take them as seriously as if they were the legal truth. Here are 9 unwritten rules every Northern California lives by until death.

1. Complaining about real estate costs is a way to bond.

The high cost of living and skyrocketing real estate prices are a headache for many buyers, renters, and homeowners. So you can bet people will be up for commiserating.

2. Yoga is a way of life.

Stressed out? Yoga. Want to shed some pounds? Yoga. Trying to find your zen? Yoga.

3. You must have a favorite taqueria.

How will you join in the conversation when talk inevitably turns to food? It's NorCal, and we take our tacos pretty seriously around here.

4. Learn to parallel park, or prepare to be ridiculed.

Parking can be limited in many areas of NorCal, especially in the bigger cities. Learn to parallel park. Don't be like this guy in the picture.

5. You can tell a lot about a person based on Burning Man.

When you broadcast to your friends that you're going to Burning Man, are your friends clamoring to hook you up with rides, supplies, and tickets? If so, you're a well-liked person. Burning Man assistance doesn't go to just anyone.

6. Don't wear branded high-tech apparel.

Sure, the majority of the population in the Bay Area may be involved with some kind of tech. But we're also a low-key bunch here in NorCal, and our jobs don't get broadcasted on our chests.

7. Organic, sustainable, locally sourced, etc.

We love our organic food around here, and that means supporting local farmers, sustainable farms, etc.

8. Speaking of farmers markets, dogs are welcome...shhh.

Some farmers markets may say "no dogs allowed," but many vendors will give Fido a snack anyway.

9. Go paper, not plastic.

California doesn't give out plastic bags anymore, so bring your own paper bags or reusable bags. Come on, it's the least you can do for our environment.
