Most People Have No Idea This Underwater City In Northern California Even Exists
Mormon Island, a Gold Rush-era town now submerged under Folsom Lake, occasionally becomes visible during droughts, revealing historical artifacts.
We've got several ghost towns in Northern California, but not very many that are underwater! In the 1850s, Mormon Island was one of the largest towns involved in the Gold Rush. The town was founded by two members of the Mormon Battalion from Sutter's Fort in Sacramento. The pair discovered gold right along the banks of the American River, and a city popped up alongside it. A hundred years later, the American River was dammed to form Folsom Lake. This is one of the largest reservoirs in Northern California and a major source of hydroelectric power for the region. The town of Mormon Island was flooded during the project. It now rests at the bottom of Folsom Lake and was unseen for many years. However, in recent years with California droughts drastically lowering water levels, Mormon Island has been visible to the public on several occasions.
Most of Mormon Island is always underwater. But in early 2015, Folsom Lake dropped to the lowest level it had been in decades. People from all over the state were able to walk through the ruins of this long-forgotten underwater town in Northern California.
When Mormon Island is exposed, there are tons of artifacts left over all over the town. The water has taken a toll on many of the items that remain here. It feels as if the town is frozen in time and covered with rust.
Folsom Lake provides both water and power to Northern California. In non-drought years, Mormon Island is completely covered at the bottom of this deep blue lake. The lake is fed by snow melt flowing down from the mountains.
Despite the fact that they've been submerged for over 70 years, there are still a few crumbling structures that remain from Mormon Island.
At one point, the thriving town of Mormon Island was the site of many lively hotels, storefronts, homes, and more.
Even if you come to Folsom Lake when Mormon Island is underwater, you can still view a historical marker. If you do visit when the lake levels are at their normal height, it's amazing to remember that there is a whole town beneath the surface as you gaze out across the lake.
