Though long abandoned, the historic homestead is filled with remnants from the past. Even better, the site can be easily explored, thanks to a trail that winds right through it.
Located near Ponca, Hedges Homestead is the former home of Margaret and Harold Hedges.
Well-known members of the community, the two played a huge role in helping the Buffalo National River gain “national river” protections in the 1970s.
You might even recognize their name, as the well-known landmark, Hedges Pouroff, bears it.
In 1991, the Hedges moved from the area and donated their land to the parks service. It’s since been transformed into an informative trail known as the Hedges Homestead Trail.
An out-and-back trail, it winds through the abandoned homestead.
It follows the path of an old road, making for an easy-to-navigate trek.
Offering a unique peek into the past, the trail is lined with relics from yesteryear.
As you meander along, you’ll come across the ruins of old buildings, a rundown cemetery from the 1800s, and dilapidated school site, just to name a few.
Hedges Homestead Trail has more to offer than antiquated artifacts, though. Beautiful sights are just as plentiful.
In addition to expansive vistas of the Buffalo River, you’ll encounter a pristine pond, boulder-filled creek, and Hedges Hole, an old-fashioned swimming hole.
