Arizona may be State 48 but it still has a long history that dates back further than its becoming a state in 1912. Pioneers and settlers had been coming here for decades prior to its statehood and have left behind evidence of what life was like during the time they lived. There's one historic ranch in Arizona that's worth taking a stroll through to get a sense of life in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Come visit, see what's changed, and get a feel of what remains the same as it did in the 19th century.

With its setting in the foothills of the Huachuca Mountains in Sierra Vista, Brown Canyon Ranch's somewhat remote location may be one reason why it feels like stepping back in time when you visit.

Step back into time to the late 1900s as you stroll through the property of Brown Canyon Ranch. This historic ranch is overseen by Friends of the Brown Canyon Ranch who have worked hard to preserve its history over the years.

When you come here, you'll have to visit the four-room adobe ranch house that was built in the early 20th century. The Brown Canyon Ranch House is open during the day.

Brown Canyon Ranch was first settled around the year 1880 by John Thomas Brown. The ranch did change hands several times over the years, however. There was Jack Parker and William Frierson in the early 20th century before it was passed to their children who occupied the ranch through the 1920s.

After several additional ownership changes, the ranch house and its surrounding land were acquired by the Coronado National Forest.

I urge you to visit Brown Canyon Ranch, go for an easy hike around the property, and imagine what life was like in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
