You don't need a time machine to travel back to the 19th century - at least, not when places like Heritage Square in Phoenix exist. Frozen in the past, this quaint city block is home to the Rosson House, an 1895 Queen Anne Victorian-style mansion that eternalizes the early days of our capital city. It's a fun and educational experience the whole family is sure to enjoy.
Situated on Block 14 of the original Phoenix townsite, Heritage Square offers a fascinating glimpse into our city's rich history.
Here, you'll find the Rosson House Museum, an 1895 Queen Anne Victorian mansion beautifully restored to its original condition.
Touring the museum is like stepping back in time, with antique furnishings and period décor in every room.
A knowledgeable docent will show you around, offering little-known pieces of information that enrich the already unforgettable experience.
As you make your way through the home, you'll walk in the footsteps of the four families who resided there at various points throughout history.
You'll get to know each of the families, learning all about their lives and admiring the modern luxuries - such as running water and electricity - that their wealth allowed them to enjoy. If you have little ones, your guide will capture their attention with plenty of fun facts about the children of the house - for example, did you know that, regardless of age, children were required to stay in the nursery for most of the day?
Visitors can expect to spend about 45 minutes on the tour, which leaves plenty of time to slow down and appreciate the intricate details.
With how thoughtfully everything has been placed, it truly looks as if the museum is still a private residence. This is living history at its very finest!
You'll even see the in-home doctor's office where the first homeowner, Dr. Roland Lee Rosson (after whom the museum is named), practiced.
He was a physician, general surgeon, and even served as the mayor of Phoenix at one point.
General admission to the Rosson House is $12 for ages six and up, and children five and under as well as Heritage Square members get in free.
Discounts are available for various groups, and you can visit the official website or Facebook page for details.
Before leaving Heritage Square, why not stroll around and do a little more sightseeing?
The area is full of charming shops and restaurants, including the world-famous Pizzeria Bianco. Your taste buds will thank you for grabbing a slice!
Tours are held every hour, on the hour from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are available both online and at the Visitor Center.
