A report released by TRIP in 2020 found that Arizona has the highest interstate fatality rate in the entire United States.

This reaffirmed the conclusions of a 2019 report that was requested by Congress.

On Arizona highways, there are 1.09 deaths for every 100 million vehicles. The most dangerous interstates in Arizona are quite terrifying.

Mississippi follows closely behind with one death for every 100 millions vehicles, and all other states have even lower numbers.

According to TRIP, safety on the road is determined by traffic law enforcement, public education, and engineering.

By this logic, Arizona transportation officials need to screen all of those factors and see where improvements can be made.

In many instances, driver carelessness is the main factor of interstate fatality.

Crashes caused by vehicles going the wrong way have increased in recent years, a trend that has nothing to do with highway safety standards.

Some highways are more dangerous than others. The infamous U.S. 93, 200 miles of which traverse Arizona, was once among the most dangerous roadways in the country.

Thankfully, comprehensive improvements have made the interstate much safer these days.

The report wasn't all bad. In fact, Arizona saw decreases in fatalities involving pedestrians, alcohol, distracted drivers, and failure to use a seatbelt.

Traffic fatalities in Arizona also reached a three-year low in 2019.

Only 2% of interstate pavement was in poor condition, and a mere 1% of bridges had structural deficiencies.

As a matter-of-fact, the conditions of pavement and bridges on Arizona interstates ranked among the nation's best.
