Way back in 1918, a little accident while making a policeman a sandwich at Philippe’s in downtown LA resulted in a popular menu item that has brought people back to the restaurant for over 100 years.
The chef mistakenly dropped the French roll into the pan used for roasting, which was full of cooking juices. The officer said he would take the sandwich as it was, and he enjoyed it so much that he brought others back with him to order more.
The resulting creation became a staple that spread all over the city and eventually, all over the country.
