The town of Deadwood has a sordid history of violence and lawlessness. When Seth Bullock came into town in 1876, it was a deadly place where murder was an almost daily event. Bullock was eventually named Sheriff of the town, and he built the town’s first hotel. Though Seth Bullock is long dead, many say he never left his hotel…
Historic Bullock Hotel was built in 1895 by Seth Bullock and his business partner, Sol Star. The hotel is located at 633 Main Street.
The hotel is three stories and was built with 63 rooms with steam heat and indoor baths. The hotel was the first in Deadwood, and cost $40,000 to build.
Bullock was a legendary Sheriff who was fearless when it came to ridding Deadwood of its outlaws. He was also a proud, savvy business owner who took great pride in offering elegant, upscale lodging to visitors.
Seth's presence is also often felt in the hotel's restaurant. Glasses and dishware fly off tables, and appliances suddenly start operating when no one is around.
Guests report seeing the full apparition of Seth himself, often in the middle of the night. The showers turn on and off by themselves, alarm clocks go off, and even unplugged televisions operate.
Room 211 is supposedly one of the most haunted rooms.
