The Whole Flounder At Anson Restaurant In South Carolina Will Make Your Mouth Water

Anson Restaurant in Charleston, South Carolina, is renowned for its crispy whole flounder with apricot glaze.

Fish lovers delight at the prospect of dining out in South Carolina. Perhaps its our touristy nature, but the overwhelming number of restaurants that feature seafood in the Palmetto State makes it easy to find a perfect spot to fit the mood when you want to feast of fish. While scores of restaurants showcase a menu item of a whole fish (some even leave the head on), there's little competition when it comes to serving a whole flounder that leaves a lasting impression and desire for a return trip, quite like the crispy, whole flounder served at Anson Restaurant in Charleston.

Scored with diamonds across the belly of the fish and then coated in a sugary apricot glaze, the crispy whole flounder at Anson is delectable.

Served sans head, the fish usually stretches from one end of the plate to the other and is bite after bite of flaky white flounder cooked to perfection before the glaze is even added.

It's such a popular item that an overwhelming number of images posted on social media from Anson are of this very dish.

Little do most people know that when Anson first opened, it had a sister restaurant located about 150 feet away that included the crispy flounder on its Italian-themed menu. Anson, however, did not.

But the locals knew Anson was owned by the same family and they began ordering the crispy flounder at Anson.

Anson would then have to place an order at Garibaldi's (the Italian restaurant the family owned), and then go over and pick it up.

Eventually, Anson just added the dish to its menu, making the whole process much easier. Anson serves Southern fare in stylish digs. You'll find everything on the menu from steak to fish, shrimp and grits, and even a cheeseburger. But trust us: get the whole flounder with the apricot glaze.

And then order dessert!

Anson Restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. Reservations are not required, but they are recommended. See the full dinner menu here. Make a reservation here.
