Rhode Island’s Only True General Store Is A Beloved Local Treasure
Summit General Store in Rhode Island is the state's only true old-fashioned general store, operating since 1888.
Rhode Island is filled to the brim with historic buildings, monuments, houses, and folklore. So it's pretty surprising that Rhody only has one true general store, especially since they were so prominent in America in the 1800s and early 1900s. But it's true -- you'll only find one real, old-fashioned general store in the Ocean State. But once you take a peek inside the Summit General Store, you'll realize that one is enough.
Summit is a small village that sits within the town of Coventry.
Summit General Store was constructed in 1888.
Remarkably, it has never gone out of business, and it's still located in its original building.
General stores were popular in the 1800s, and for good reason. Back before the days of large department stores, chain supermarkets, or nearby amenities, one-stop shopping was necessary.
Typically, a general store was a grocery store, a deli, a clothing store, a farm supply store, and a post office all in one.
In some ways, the store's selection hasn't changed much -- in fact, you'll still find the village post office inside, along with fresh groceries and animal feed.
But these days, you'll also find unique gifts and a pre-made food section here. There's even a DVD rental section, and we all know how rare old-fashioned video rental is these days.
Summit General Store is open Monday - Saturday from 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Sundays from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
It's important to support our historic treasures like these, so stop by for a sandwich the next time you're in the area.
Did you know that Rhode Island only had one remaining true general store? Have you ever shopped at Summit General Store?
