Rhode Island is full of unique history, much of it related to the state’s dark and fascinating past involvement with organized crime. Prohibition was a rough-and-tumble time in the Ocean State – a far cry from today’s popular tourist destinations. All that lies long in the past, but there’s one spot in Rhode Island that has lived on – for good reason. This restaurant was once a speakeasy, and it’s still one of the best places in the state to grab a burger. You have to check it out!
The Charlestown Rathskeller was officially opened as a German-themed restaurant in 1933, on the site tucked away in the woods where its owner had previously operated a speakeasy.
These days, the Rat (as it's affectionately known) is a great place to enjoy a great vibe and frequent live music. The restaurant is open every day, and the bar stays open until 1 a.m.
The tavern has the coziest vibe, complete with a roaring fireplace. Whether you come for a quick drink or bring your whole family for a delicious meal, you're sure to feel right at home.
Of course, you absolutely have to indulge in one of their amazing cocktails. As you'd expect with the restaurant's speakeasy past, they serve a mean drink!
