This Little Known Garden Near Portland Is Picture Perfect
Garden lovers will enjoy a trip to this little known garden that dazzles in Southwest Portland. Featuring a medley of seasonally flowering plants, this garden is a perfect respite from busy days and a lovely place to relax and enjoy some quiet.
Spring is a beautiful time to visit the garden, when the first blooms of the season emerge.
Winter, summer and fall blooms all play around the garden, making it an equally as lovely place to visit year round.
The house on the property was built in 1914 for Peter and Laurie Kerr. Prior to that, Kerr, an immigrant from Scotland, lived in another house on the same site from the 1890s with his brother and a business partner.
Sitting on 13 acres above the Willamette River, the property has a wonderful view of Mt. Hood. The new house, designed by D.E. Lawrence, was made to look like a Scottish manor house.
Once the two-year construction of the house was complete, Kerr set to work designing the gardens that the house is known for today.
In 1957, when Kerr died at the age of 95, the house and garden were passed on by his daughters to the Episcopal Bishop of Oregon along with an endowment for its upkeep.
One stipulation of this agreement was that the garden would be open for public enjoyment.
The gardens and views from this off-the-beaten path location are spectacular, and a pleasure to enjoy throughout the changing of the seasons.
From 1986, the garden has been managed by a garden committee, and in 1994 the Elk Rock Garden Foundation and the Friends of Elk Rock Garden Foundation were formed to help take care of and preserve the garden.
Whether you want to take a quiet walk or lounge on the plush lawn, this is one peaceful place to relax and reconnect with nature.
Elk Rock Garden is located at 11800 SW Military Lane in Portland.
