This Charming Town Near Cleveland Is Perfect For A Day Trip
We Clevelanders love our hometown, but admittedly, we all eventually crave time away from its bustling city streets. Sure, the city is beautiful and there is a lot to do, but sometimes city life just gets exhausting. There’s nothing like a day trip to a super scenic small town to bring one down to earth. One nearby community rises above the rest as the ultimate day trip getaway, and it’s less than 90 minutes from home. You simply must plan a trip to see this lovely landscape!
Welcome to Dover, Ohio!
This picture perfect city is only home to about 12,000 residents, and it is a charming combination of small town life, rural rolling landscapes, and must-see tourist attractions. The SafeWise Report named Dover the safest city in the state, making it an easy place to kick back and enjoy some vacation time.
This historic community will take you back to a simpler time.
This farmhouse was turned into a mansion at the turn of the century, and it parallels the expansion of a tiny farming community. What was established as a petite community in 1807 soon grew into a cultured community, as The Dover Historical Society could tell you. Today, Dover is known for having the third longest-running football rivalry in the state and for hosting the Tuscarawas County Italian-American Festival. Part of the city's story is preserved and celebrated at the Reeves Victorian Home and Carriage House Museum, and it is definitely worth a visit.
While you're in town, you must visit the world famous Warther Museum at 331 Karl Avenue.
Nestled away in a charming Swiss chalet is a world famous museum you've probably never heard of. Ernest "Mooney" Warther, World’s Master Carver, created a collection of trains carved out of ebony and ivory, a collection which the Smithsonian considers to be priceless. Walk through the Swiss gardens and take in the incredible outdoor displays during your visit. You won't believe how interactive this tour is, and Warther's incredible handiwork will leave you in awe.
And what day trip is ever complete without a visit to a winery?
When this old one room schoolhouse was constructed in 1886, its community probably never imagined that it would one day be Ohio's most unusual winery. School House Winery is located at 455 Schneiders Crossing Road Northwest, and you absolutely must visit it during your time in Dover. Try the Teacher's Ade lemonade flavored wine, or sip on the bold flavors of Bully Red. This winery is easy to access, only 2.5 miles off the Exit 85 on I-77.
And no trip into Tuscarawas County is complete without a stop at the Broad Run Cheese House.
You're already stocked up on wine, so now you need some cheese and, well... more wine. Nestled in a picture perfect Swiss chalet at 6011 Old Route 39 Northwest, this gift shop is overflowing with charm. The shop dates back to 1933 and hasn't strayed from their legacy of quality.
Dover locals love having their own vintage soda fountain, and you'll love it, too.
Your taste buds will thank you for a visit to Eiler Candy Shop. This super sweet shop features handmade chocolates and an impressive selection of candies and nuts. No visit to a soda fountain is complete without a beverage or two, so stop by and sip away the day.
Ohio's Amish Country may seem like a weird destination for the American Gas Pump Heaven Museum, but that's part of the fun.
The fact that you probably would not expect to find such a museum in Dover is part of what makes it so unusual and fascinating. Located just north of the river at 99 North Tuscarawas Avenue, you won't be able to miss the replica Sohio gas station that sits in the parking lot.
There is an incredible amount of history preserved in this community, and you will find yourself blown away by all of it.
Places like the Auman Museum go beyond the borders of Dover and instead tell the story of us all. This museum will take you on an exploration of technology of yore, and you'll love every minute of it.
You may consider expanding your day trip into a weekend excursion.
We don't blame you for wanting to stay in this picturesque community for a little while. If you wish to combine the quaint charm of Dover with luxury and nature, you simply must visit the Columbia Woodlands Resort.
