Prepare to travel back in time when you pay a visit to Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park in Sonoma County. This historic ranch house is an excellently preserved structure from the 19th century. This place is bursting with fascinating stories so get ready to experience a piece of the past!
The adobe structure is the park's most notable feature. Built in 1836, it was considered the largest privately owned adobe structure in the state of California at that time. The structure itself is absolutely beautiful, but it's who owned the structure that makes it so unique.
The structure served as General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo's 66,000-acre working ranch for a decade and soon became an agricultural empire. Vallejo was considered one of the most powerful men in the Mexican Province of California during his time at this ranch.
There were roughly 600 to 2,000 people working at the ranch during its most prosperous time. The design of the structure is considered unique since it was meant to function as both a headquarters of a working ranch and a defensive structure against attacks by the Russians who then lived on the California coast.
Vallejo built an empire due to this ranch. However, it wasn't long before it began crumbling down. In 1846, the United States and Mexico went to war. Vallejo was taken captive during the Bear Flag Revolt. By the time he was released, squatters had already taken over the land and the Gold Rush had driven labor prices up. The ranch was never the same after that.
The once-magnificent adobe structure fell into a state of decay. However, it was registered as an official California State Historical Landmark in 1932 and repairs began to take place. Today, it's estimated that about 80% of the adobe brick is original from the days of Vallejo.
