Are you a fan of exploring California’s abandoned places? There’s something weird yet incredible about visiting a place that used to serve a purpose but now stands silently in desolation. Most people are aware of the famous ghost town of Bodie which we’ve
written about in the past, but few know that nearby this ghost town is an abandoned mine that is definitely worth checking out as well. This place is absolutely mesmerizing and it even has a haunted reputation.
Few people are aware that the Chemung Mine even exists, despite the fact that it's just a short distance away from the more well-known abandoned town of Bodie. However, the mine is definitely worth a visit if you're a fan of creepy abandoned places.
It's definitely possible to drive pretty close to the ruins. Tthe unpaved road is extremely bumpy and it will require a bit of hiking to get to the mine itself. If you wish to stretch the hike, you could even start from Bridgeport and hike or mountain bike the entirety of Masonic Road.
You'll drive down the rugged Masonic Road until you see the site. Here you can park and hike a short spell to the mine itself. The landscape is rugged but the sight of the abandoned mine is definitely worth the effort.
Soon, the Chemung Mine will come into view. It's exciting to see such a huge structure hidden way out here in the Bodie Hills. This isn't a frequently visited place so it's likely you'll be all by yourself here.
You'll be totally blown away when you see the mine up close. The mine is absolutely massive, yet nature is slowly reclaiming this place. It's a beautiful sight, if not a little creepy.
The Chemung Mine was constructed in 1909 and operated until 1938. When it was in operation, the area contained a mill, mine offices, bunkhouse and general store, all of which have been left behind untouched for decades.
As is suggested when visiting any abandoned place, please use caution when exploring the structures. Don't go into any structure that doesn't seem safe. Over the years, the mine has only been deteriorating. Use your best judgement when visiting this fascinating site.
There's definitely a spooky presence here. The story goes that the mine's foreman was found cheating he employees and was eventually found murdered at the site before it got shut down. People say that as a result, the mine is haunted by his ghost (particularly on Saturday nights).
Whether the Chemung Mine is haunted or not is up for debate. However, there's no doubt that there's something spectacular about seeing this decaying mine in person. This place is a fascinating reflection of an important part of California's history that has long passed.
