When dining out, we always have a distinction between our go-to spots and those reserved for special occasions. If ever there was a restaurant that should be added to both of those lists, it’s Webb Custom Kitchen in downtown Gastonia. Located within the confines of an old, opulent silent movie theater, Webb Custom Kitchen (WCK) takes the art of dining out to another level.
The decadent experience begins at the street level with a theater marquis that's survived from days gone by and an entrance even more grand than in the Golden Age when the Webb Theater first opened in Gastonia in 1927.
Dining tables throughout the theater-turned-restaurant turn even the balconies into intimate dining spaces that overlook the movie screen that usually has some old flick playing, without sound, of course.
Seating in the main gallery also has a great view of the old movie screen and the decorative ceiling carried over from the original days of the Webb Theater.
And below the elevated stage, in a space you'd normally expect to find an orchestra, you'll find the Webb Custom Kitchen kitchen in full view of the restaurant.
But the beautiful, historic space isn't the only thing that will captivate your attention. The food at WCK is all the rave — and with good reason! The menu features a wide array of choices for lunch and dinner that includes everything from wings and burgers to mouthwatering steaks and fresh seafood.
The old Webb Theater opened in Gastonia during the Golden Age when nearby mills were at their height and just before the Great Depression fully arrived in North Carolina. In the beginning, it played silent movies. Over the years since it officially closed, it was used as a restaurant and then by the city as a combination of offices and storage. Upon opening in early 2016, Webb Custom Kitchen was an overnight sensation.
