9 Unassuming Restaurants in North Carolina to Add to Your Dining Bucket List

You don’t have to visit a five-star restaurant to enjoy a five-star meal – just head to one of these unassuming North Carolina favorites.

North Carolina is full of hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path eateries. From award-winning BBQ joints down long, country roads to cash-only burger shacks tucked behind small-town gas stations, the Tar Heel State is a food lover’s paradise. There are so many hole-in-the-wall restaurants – I've done many articles on the subject. From my first compiled list, to the second, to even hard-to-find but worth the search restaurants.

Each of these small, locally loved spots brings its own charm – whether you’re craving a perfectly messy burger or a hearty Southern breakfast. These nine are a must-try!

1. Brooks’ Sandwich House, Charlotte: A Hidden Gem for Classic Sandwiches

The first time I stumbled upon Brooks (while turning around down a dead end), I assumed it was an abandoned building. Nope, this cash-only burger joint serves some of the best, simple, classic, and greasy fare. Get a burger 'all the way' (chili, cheese, slaw). There’s limited parking on-site, but street parking is usually available nearby.

2. Saxapahaw General Store: A Cozy Spot Serving Southern Comfort Food

Coined as a 'five-star' gas station, Saxapahaw General Store isn't just a place to get fresh produce, household items, and unique finds. It's perfect for an unexpected, delicious meal from breakfast to dinner. Located along the scenic Haw River, it’s a great pit stop if you’re exploring the Saxapahaw River Mill or attending a concert at the Haw River Ballroom.

3. Hap’s Grill, Salisbury: A Beloved Local Spot for Hearty Meals

Tucked away, and sometimes hard to find (unless you spot the usual lunch line), Hap's is the perfect spot to grab a chili cheese dog and wash it down with an ice-cold Cheerwine (in the birthplace of Cheerwine). It's a true hidden gem to those outside of Salisbury, while the interior is tight, grab it to go and stroll the historic district. Seating is limited, so those needing more space or wheelchair access may prefer takeout.

4. Wildlife Restaurant & Grill, Southport: Fresh, Local Seafood Favorites

Wildlife is a local hangout, which serves delicious, affordable, home-cooked breakfast and lunch. Talk about country cookin' right on the coast! After your meal, take a short drive to the Southport Waterfront Park for coastal views and sea breezes.

5. Warren’s Hot Dogs & Pizza Too, Greenville: Classic Eats with Local Charm

alt

Located near the airport in Greenville, Warren's is a place an outsider might pass and think "uh, no," but it's actually home to some of the best hot dogs on the East Coast. You can't go wrong with an all-the-way dog, and make sure to try their spicy chili sauce. The casual setting makes this an excellent stop for families or travelers heading to and from the airport.

6. Duke’s Grill, Monroe: A Cozy Spot for Delicious Home-Cooked Meals

alt

Duke's Grill is a local favorite, but it's worth the drive for those in nearby cities or towns. You can't go wrong with an all-the-way burger, but make sure to get a side of crispy onion rings. It’s best to visit early – they close mid-afternoon, and seating fills up quickly during lunch rush.

7. Southern On Main, Elkin: Charming Eats and Sweet Treats

alt

Southern On Main is the perfect place for a quaint breakfast, like their homemade oatmeal pancakes, or a hearty lunch like a club sandwich piled high with the freshest ingredients. The majority of the ingredients are locally sourced, and you can't beat the attention to detail in each meal. Don't forget to finish it off with some sonker (a local dessert). Here are some tips – if you’re craving something very early, breakfast or oatmeal pancakes, be sure to call ahead to confirm their morning options.

8. Claremont Cafe, Claremont: A Local Favorite for Homestyle Comfort Food

alt

Claremont Cafe is about as simple as it gets, and it's definitely not a stop for the more health-conscious. It's the place for greasy goodness, from a slaw dog to a cheeseburger – delicious but straightforward should be their business slogan! While it’s known for indulgent comfort food, the friendly service and hometown feel welcome diners of all kinds.

9. Mario’s Restaurant, Forest City: Classic Diner Fare with Small-Town Charm

alt

While we've covered a wide range of burger joints and even a bistro, one section left unmentioned is Italian. Mario’s Restaurant in Forest City has some of the best pizza you'll ever try in North Carolina. You can't beat their calzones or even a classic spaghetti. It’s a casual, family-friendly spot with generous portions and a warm atmosphere. Here is their address – 515 Hardin Rd, Forest City, NC 28043.
