Roots are important. Where we came from has a way of steering where we’re headed. North Carolina has more than a few historic landmarks to be proud of, and the oldest grocery store in the state is certainly one of them.
From 1890 on, Thompson's Store in Saluda has been the heart of the community.
If you're scrambling to do some quick math in your head... that's 128 years. In the early days, the store moved to its current spot at 24 Main Street in Saluda. Although some upgrades have been made throughout the years, stepping into Thompson's is like stepping into a bygone era. The bead-board ceiling is an obvious reminder.

Another remarkable fact about Thompson's Store is that it's still operated by the same family.
The current Thompsons aren't even direct descendants of the original Thompsons (one is the widow of the third generation; the other is a cousin) but that doesn't matter as much as keeping the store in the family and continuing the tradition of North Carolina's Oldest Grocery Store.
In the 1950s, Thompson's added a restaurant next door. Ward's Grill is as much of a staple on Main Street as is the old grocery store.
Open six days a week (closed on Sundays), Ward's serves breakfast and lunch. Whether you're up for a quick snack or a heaping plate of comfort food, Ward's has you covered.
The oldest grocery store in North Carolina is a vital piece of North Carolina history and worthy of a visit. (You'll find plenty of other interesting things to do in Saluda too!)
