This Gigantic North Carolina Quarry Tour Belongs At The Top Of Your Bucket List

Not many people realize North Carolina is home to the world’s largest open-faced rock quarry. Or that before Mt. Airy became famous as the inspiration for the iconic town of Mayberry from TV’s “The Andy Griffith Show,” the local rock quarry had long since already put the tiny North Carolina town on the world map.

We’re aware that these uncertain times are limiting many aspects of life as we all practice social and physical distancing. While we’re continuing to feature destinations that make our state wonderful, we don’t expect or encourage you to go check them out immediately. We believe that supporting local attractions is important now more than ever and we hope our articles inspire your future adventures! And on that note, please nominate your favorite local business that could use some love right now:

It’s free to visit the observation deck at North Carolina Granite Corp! It’s accessible by car (with parking at the deck) and is open any day that the quarry is in operation (even on weekends!) during daylight hours. Learn more on the official website. The above quarry isn’t the only “world’s largest” on the record books in North Carolina. We’re also home to the world’s largest zoo. Learn more here!
