We can’t fight it; as humans, something inside of us is naturally drawn to anything that gives us the feeling of nostalgia. Exploring historical sites and revisiting abandoned areas of our home state help us better imagine and understand what once was. Only a couple hours north of New York City lies this abandoned village with much debated history, ready to check it out?
Opening its doors in the early 1900s, the now shambled Letchworth Village was up and running for over 80 years. Located in Rockland County, this village once served as an institution to those suffering from mental issues.
Just a couple hours north of New York City, this vine-covered village has been a long time favorite for locals to come and scope out. Closing its doors for good in 1996, this since-abandoned institution has been rumored to have paranormal activity.
Dying to know what disturbing details fueled the paranormal rumors of Letchworth Village? For starters, in the institution's younger years, the people running the show at Letchworth would harvest deceased patients brains in jars to display around the hospital. Yikes!
Another strange piece of information you might find odd to hear? Letchworth Village administered the first Polio vaccine trial, giving the experimental drug to a patient of only 8 years old in 1950. Many of the children that were residents of this New York institution sadly found themselves subject to trials and experiments that they did not wish to participate in.
Initially meant to house a relatively small number of residents, once Letchworth Village grew larger in numbers it quickly fell into hardship and began to suffer from issues with funding.
Over the years attempts have been made to try and sell this eerie property, never having much success. While it is illegal and considered trespassing to go inside any of the buildings in Letchworth Village, the actual grounds themselves are open to the public.
Ready to be completely creeped out? Check out this footage below from Antiquity Echoes showing more of Letchworth Village’s past and present!
