There are some truly spectacular hikes in New Mexico, each highlighting the diverse scenery offered in every corner of the state. But the East Fork Box Trail offers a stunning taste of nearly every beautiful sight that New Mexico has to offer. Stunning Jemez River views, soaring mountainscapes, lush greenery, waterfalls, rocky backdrops... your whole family is sure to love this easy, magical journey through the canyon! Winding along the edge of the scenic Whitewater Canyon and overlooking a gorgeous creek just outside of the Gila Wilderness, the Catwalk is a series of suspension bridges that offer beautiful views and a shady escape into a slice of New Mexico that was once known for its abundant gold and silver. Because of its accessibility, this trail is more heavily visited than some of the others, so plan your timing carefully. And, because this area is inching pretty far south, be sure to come prepared with extra water and sunscreen on hand.
4. Bisti Badlands/De-Na-Zin Wilderness Main Loop, San Juan County
Much like the infamous Teepee Rocks to the southeast, the main loop in the Bisti Badlands are chock full of incredible rock formations. Hoodoos, wells, caverns, and more make this area an absolute marvel for all ages - but especially younger visitors with active imaginations! This trail really captures the magic of the rocky natural wonders that make New Mexico so special.
For a taste of iconic New Mexican beauty, Dripping Springs Trail in the Desert Peaks National Monument offers stunning southwest beauty in a compact, three-mile trail. If you can keep younger visitors engaged for the first few hundred feet, the gradually emerging scenery and unique ruins will take care of the rest. Bring a plant guidebook with you so that you can identify the mesquite trees, creosote bushes, and grama grass along the mellow trail!
