This Massive Greenhouse In New Jersey Is Like A Dream Come True
Duke Farms in New Jersey offers a magical greenhouse experience with over 1,500 species of orchids.
As the Garden State, New Jersey has a number of greenhouses, growing fresh fruits and veggies all year long. Most are businesses, though a few do offer events and tours. A few favorites include Abma's Farm Market & Greenhouse in Wyckoff and Hallock's U-Pick Farm & Greenhouse in New Egypt. Though both are lovely, they're quite a bit different than the gorgeous greenhouse we're featuring today.
Duke Farms is among the most enchanting places in the Garden State.
The former estate of heiress and philanthropist Doris Duke, it was opened to the public in 2012.
There's plenty of outdoor fun to be had, from hiking trails to scavenger hunts.
The grounds are gorgeous and you never know what you'll find.
There's indoor fun to be found, as well. Enjoy exhibits at the orientation center and educational classes.
Perhaps most magical though is the greenhouse! Renovated in 2011, it houses an enchanting orchid display. While there are several greenhouses, this energy efficient glass greenhouse is the most iconic. What lies inside will amaze you...
You'll find over 1,500 species of both tropical and subtropical orchids, with a focus on those that grow within the United States.
Naturally occurring orchid species are highlighted to demonstrate their growing habits - among trees, on branches and rocks. A visit here will transport you to a colorful, fragrant paradise.
You'll find Duke Farms at 1112 Dukes Parkway West, Hillsborough. Free to visit, they are open daily (except Wednesday) from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Upcoming events include an Intro to Orchards Class (with tour) on March 10th ($35) and a Farm to Table Indoor Winter Market on March 11th (free).
