New Hampshire has no shortage of creepy stories and haunted happenings to explore. Portsmouth, New Hampshire specifically is the site of many well-known spooky haunts. One of the coolest is the Portsmouth Music Hall, a still-functional music hall with a rich history, and it may just be haunted by ghosts of its past! If you love to envelope yourself in the histories of yore with a touch of the paranormal, you’ll want to check this place out.

New Hampshire itself has a very rich history.

New Hampshire was originally home to various Native American tribes, mainly the Androscoggin and Pennacook nations. English and French settlers first came to the state in 1600.

The seaside city of Portsmouth is the cite of many supposedly haunted places, including six historic cemeteries.

With its long history, it’s easy to see how restless spirits could have accumulated here.

The Portsmouth Music Hall has a deliciously spooky lore. Located on Chestnut Street in the historic downtown, it was built in 1806 during the Victorian era. The hall has since been restored to its original glory and hosts events and programs to this day.

The hall originally was used as a temple for religious concerts, though the simple building burned down in 1876. Two years later, the hall was rebuilt, becoming more secular in its pursuits – and much more opulent in décor.

Many famous musicians have graced the stage, including Mark Twain, Harry Houdini, John Philip Sousa, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Maude Adams.

As for ghosts? Nobody knows exactly who – or what – may be haunting this place. But there definitely seems to be some paranormal activity happening.

According to multiple eye-witness accounts, apparitions have been seen walking onstage behind the closed curtains, causing the curtains to flutter. Patrons have also reported a shadowy mist onstage, that gets in the way of actors.

Luckily, the Portsmouth Music Hall hosts multiple public events, so you can go ghost hunting for yourself – if you dare!
