Here in Nevada, we’re always interested in learning more about the Silver State’s history and how it came to be the amazing state we live in today. A trip to this history museum in Overton offers a fascinating glimpse at Nevada’s first residents, including displays of artifacts and an authentic recreation of a Native American village. One of seven State of Nevada museums, the Lost City Museum in Overton is dedicated to preserving the history of the Ancestral Puebloan People who have lived in Southeast Nevada for thousands of years.
Created in 1935 by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the majority of the museum's artifacts were recovered from local prehistoric archaeological sites. Many of these sites were flooded when Lake Mead was formed, and the artifacts would've otherwise been drowned and lost forever.
Excavations began in the area back in 1924 and continued until 1938. The area proved to be extremely rich in archaeological finds and was named the Pueblo Grande de Nevada. In the press, the area was affectionately referred to as the "Lost City."
The museum was turned over to the state of Nevada in the 1950s and has since grown into one of the most fascinating historic destinations that the state has to offer. Home to three exhibition galleries, a screening room, a research library, and a museum store, visiting the Lost City Museum is always an informative experience.
However, it's the outdoor exhibits that become a favorite for many visitors. Consisting of reconstructed pueblos and a Native American pit house, the recreated village gives visitors a glimpse at what life was like for Nevada's very first residents.
The Lost City Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free for museum members and children 17 and under, and just $5 for adults and seniors.
