Go Exploring At Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park In Nevada Where History And Natural Beauty Combine

Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park is a fascinating destination near Ely that boasts a little bit of everything. From the abandoned ruins of an old townsite to the breathtaking scenery, you’re bound to enjoy your time at this amazing Nevada park.
Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park is a public recreation area located about 20 miles south of Ely. This hidden gem of a park has something for every adventurer, as it combines local history with stunning natural scenery.
The first thing you'll see upon walking into the park is the very thing the park is most well-known for: the Ward Charcoal Ovens. Consisting of six beehive shaped structures, these ovens were used for a short period of time between 1876 and 1879 to process silver ore.
The "beehives" make for a strange sight all the way out here in the serene landscape of White Pine County. They serve as an incredible reminder of how our state came to be known as the Silver State, and they make for a pretty neat place to poke around in!
Of course, silver mines were popping up just as quick as they were shutting down in the late 19th century. The ovens were officially retired by 1880, never to be used to process ore again. Instead, they became used for shelter by travelers in the area...including stagecoach bandits (so they say.)
The area and the ovens were officially made into a state park in 1994. Visiting the park today, guests can enjoy access to established campgrounds and hiking trails that lead to spectacular views.
As with all Nevada state parks, admission costs $5 per vehicle. Although exploring the ovens may not take very long, you could easily spend a whole day fishing down at Willow Creek, off-roading across the nearby OHV trails, or doing some sightseeing around Steptoe Valley.
