If There Are Only 5 Hikes You Ever Do In Nebraska, Make Them These
In a land as wide-open as Nebraska, it goes without saying that we’ve got plenty of trails for just about everyone. There are hikes for adventurers of all abilities. The best way to explore all our natural wonders? Lace up your boots and get out into the great outdoors! Not only will you enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous scenery, but you’ll get some great exercise too. We had trouble just picking a few hikes, but if you’ve only got the time or inclination to check out five, start with these. They’re among the best hikes in Nebraska and they belong on anyone’s bucket list.
The Cowboy Trail is the longest rails-to-trails conversion in the U.S. We love the idea of these trails: they convert no-longer-used railways into recreational trails that are popular spots for hiking and biking. This one stretches an incredible 321 miles between Chadron and Norfolk. Obviously, you won't be hiking the entire trail in a day, but there are plenty of entry points to hike small portions of your choosing. Depending on what are you hike, you'll likely find bridges, river valleys, the Sandhills, and Pine Ridge. The views along the way are absolutely stunning. Much of the Cowboy Trail is paved, making it one of the most accessible trails in Nebraska, despite its long length.
2. Waterfall Hike at Smith Falls State Park: 90165 Smith Falls Rd, Valentine, NE 69201
This short, easy trail in Smith Falls State Park will take you to the spectacular 70-foot waterfall that gives the park its name. It's the tallest waterfall in Nebraska, so it pretty much has to go on your to-do list. You'll start by crossing the Verdigre iron truss bridge, cross a pretty field, then walk alongside a boardwalk to the falls. If you need to cool off after the trek, you can descend the staircase and enjoy the spray from Smith Falls.
3. Wilderness Trail at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge: 39983 Refuge Rd, Valentine, NE 69201
Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, 39983 Refuge Rd, Valentine, NE 69201, USA
This hike is pretty challenging despite its short length. It's only three-quarters of a mile, and you'll get to see part of this 19,000-acre wildlife refuge that you'll never forget. Start at the parking lot and hike just a short way to Fort Falls. This 45-foot waterfall is stunning. Continue along the Niobrara and you'll get to see all sorts of wildlife, ranging from buffalo and elk to prairie dogs. It's a lot of bang for your hiking buck for such a short trail in Nebraska.
George Shannon was the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. He was just 19 years old during the journey, and he made several embarrassing mistakes along the way. At one point, he got lost for 12 days and nearly starved to death. This 240-mile long trail will take you through some of the most beautiful scenery in Nebraska. Due to the length, most people choose to drive this trail instead of hiking it. However, it'd certainly be a great challenge for an adventurous Nebraska hiker!
5. Platte River State Park Trails: 14421 346th St, Louisville, NE 68037
Platte River State Park, 14421 346th St, Louisville, NE 68037, USA
Platte River State Park is home to five miles of trails. Exploring them will make you feel like you are visiting another world. The lush foliage and cool, shady surroundings are so quiet. You'll be utterly enchanted as you discover a pretty creek, waterfall, and a stunning overlook. This is truly one of the most tranquil places in Nebraska.

What are some great kid-friendly hikes in Nebraska?
Due to our large size and remote areas, many of the trails in Nebraska are long and not suitable for kids or beginning hikers. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t great family-friendly trails out there! The Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City is a great destination that’s got trails and even a secret garden.
Are there any waterfall hikes in Nebraska?
We’re not famous for our waterfalls in Nebraska, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have any! Smith Falls is just under 70 feet tall and it’s the tallest waterfall in the state, but there are several others worth checking out as well.
