The park is located about three miles from Sparks. It's named after Frederic Smith, the first person who filed the smallholding patent on the property surrounding the falls.
The park straddles the beautiful Niobrara National Scenic River.

The easy mile-long Smith Falls Trail takes you through the park to the waterfall on a mostly boardwalked nature path.
