The Wild And Beautiful Spot Hiding In Wyoming You Need To Put On Your Bucket List

One of the largest "wild" areas in the United States can be found right here in Wyoming. While there are many untouched areas in the state, there is one spot where man is the outsider and will not linger long. This wild and beautiful spot hiding in Wyoming is the Gros Ventre Wilderness.

The Gros Ventre Wilderness is located just east of Jackson in Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming. This expansive wilderness covers an area of 317,874 acres.

Gros Ventre, which in French means 'big belly', is protected under the 1964 Wilderness Act. This federal act was established to protect exceptional undisturbed areas of nature.

Designated U.S. Wilderness Areas do not allow motorized vehicles, equipment, hang gliders or even bicycles in these protected areas. There are no roads, buildings, logging or mining in Gros Ventre.

Activities in the wilderness are intended to be strictly "natural". Fishing and camping are allowed with a proper permit and hunting in season is also permitted.

The Gros Ventre Wilderness is surrounded by 4 rivers. It's framed by the Gros Ventre River to the north, the Hoback River to the south, the Green River to the east and the Snake River to the west.

The wilderness provides a rich habitat for wildlife. Elk, grizzly bears, wolves, bison and mountain lions all cohabitate in this untamed region.

The wilderness is made up of stark contrasts. There are big lush meadows that butt up against steep pinnacles of limestone.

The geological features in the wilderness include a hodgepodge of colorful rock and a concentration of landslides. The slide area is now part of a National Geological area known as the heartbeat of the wilderness.

You can't have a wilderness without trees. Some of the trees found here are Aspen, Douglas Fir, Lodgepole Pine, Spruce Firs and Whitebark Pines.

The Gros Ventre Mountains are a reflection of life from long ago. Still evident today are Native American vision sites and wikiups.
