Crazy Creek Canyon is located between Kaycee and Buffalo just east of I-25. Back in the mid 1800s, it was a point along the bloody Bozeman Trail.

It also served as a passageway for the Native Americans. In fact, during the Plains Indian Wars, it was a staging area for war parties.

The canyon is a spectacular sight, and one of the best nature attractions in Wyoming. The road that winds through the canyon is lined with steep cliffs on both sides of the road and immense boulders.

Two legends circulate about how the canyon got its name. One of those legends suggests that the canyon was named after a Native American woman who was left behind to live in a teepee alone. This caused her to go insane and she became a crazy woman.

The other story is that a settler witnessed the capture and scalping of her husband and children by the Native Americans. It was said that the shock and grief of what she witnessed drove her to insanity.

Crazy Woman Canyon Road is about 13 miles long and follows Crazy Woman Creek through the canyon from Powder River Basin to the eastern slope of the Bighorn Mountains.

The road is narrow and rugged, therefore, a high clearance vehicle is highly recommended.

Along with the rugged road, comes scenery that is absolutely stunning. This hidden spot in Wyoming is definitely worth the extra effort.
