If You’re Dreaming Of A White Christmas, This Part Of Wyoming Is The Place To Be

Even if you had a belly-full of snow last winter, it's OK to hope for a white Christmas. When you're from Wyoming, the holiday just wouldn't be the same without at a flurry or two.

Even though the predictions are for a milder winter this year, the good news is that there's a fairly good chance — 50 percent or better — that there will be a minimum of 1 inch of snow on the ground in many parts of Wyoming on Christmas. If you want to ensure your holiday is merry and white, your best bet is to plan on spending it in the northwest part of the state.

The NOAA has determined that there will likely be snow on the ground this Christmas in much of Wyoming.

To make that prediction, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration looked back at nearly 30 years of historical weather information, though they do make the disclaimer that actual conditions can vary due to changing weather patterns. The white areas on the map have a 100 percent chance of snow, and the light blue areas have a 76 to 90 percent chance. The probability drops as the blue gets darker. The grey areas are only supposed to have a 0 to 10 percent possibility of any snow on Christmas Day.

Based on the historical probability, the Jackson Hole area could very well be a Winter Wonderland this holiday season.

That's great news for the ski resorts in the area such as Snow King and Jackson Hole Resort at Teton Village.

There's also a pretty good chance of Thermopolis seeing some yuletide snow...

...and the area around Worland could have a 70 percent or better chance, as well.

The northeast corner of the Cowboy State, up Sundance way, also has a good probability of snow for the holiday.

There are only a few places on the NOAA's map (such as Cheyenne and a spot or two near the Wyoming/Montana border) with a low likelihood of snow, down near 0 percent. Even most towns on the eastern side of the state — like Casper — have an almost 40 percent chance of 1 inch of snow for the holiday.
