These 8 Spots Offer Unparalleled Stargazing In The Darkest Corners Of Wyoming

Wyoming offers some of the best stargazing spots in the United States, with numerous quiet locations perfect for viewing a sky full of stars.

When you ask people why they love Wyoming, despite being a vast and often barren state, one of the reasons you'll hear the most is that the night sky is unlike any other place in the country. While there are dozens of dark sky sites around the United States, here in Wyoming, there are plenty of quiet spots where you'll almost always see a sky full of stars on a cloudless night. Here are a few of our favorite places to stargaze in Wyoming.

1. Oxbow Bend

Lots of people stay up late to watch the Milky Way rise over the Tetons from the shores of Jenny Lake or Jackson Lake, but the stunning sight of Mount Moran from Oxbow Bend under a sky full of stars is one you'll never forget, for as long as you live.

2. Saratoga Hot Springs Resort

Soaking in a hot spring under the stars? Sign me up! The Saratoga Hot Springs Resort offers luxury accommodations and naturally heated soaking pools. You can also visit the Saratoga Hobo Hot Springs, which are open 24/7 every day of the year.

3. Wind River Range

The Wind River Range is home to some of the best backpacking and hiking in the country! You'll find peace and solitude in the backcountry here, and setting up your tent to sleep under the stars is hard to beat.

4. Devils Tower

Devils Tower, or Bears Lodge, is famous for its role in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and there's no better way to understand its otherwordly appeal than by seeing it under the dark, star-speckled sky.

5. Yellowstone's Geyser Basins

Yellowstone's geyser basins are likely the most famous places for astrophotography in Wyoming. Watch Old Faithful erupt under the moon and stars and you'll truly be in awe of nature's power.

6. Sheridan / Powder River Basin

You don't have to head to a crowded National Park to find stunning starscapes in Wyoming. The Bighorns and the Powder River Basin are a bit more accessible and showcase some of the darkiest skies in Wyoming.

7. Vedauwoo

If you want to enjoy dark skies without having to stray far from the city, camp at Vedauwoo! You'll be close to Laramie and Cheyenne and still get to see millions of stars above your tent.

8. Red Desert

The Red Desert is one of the most underrated destinations in Wyoming, and visiting this vast and remote landscape under the cover of night will make you feel like you're on another planet. This photo of Boar's Tusk under the core of the galaxy shows just how amazing the views can be.
