The Iconic Trail in Wyoming Everyone Should Hike Once in Their Lifetime

Moose Ponds Trail is an iconic hike in Wyoming with a chance to see plenty of wildlife up close.

When it comes to hiking, Wyoming shines with its rugged peaks, alpine meadows, and secluded, untouched trails that you can’t find anywhere else. Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park have some of the best hiking trails in the United States - well, at least in my humble opinion. Thousands of people visit Wyoming every year to get a chance to cross both of these parks off their bucket list, and it’s easy to see why.

While both parks offer endless hiking trails to explore, the Moose Ponds Trail is not to be missed. This iconic trail in Wyoming will make you fall in love with the great outdoors before you even lose sight of the trailhead. As you trek this adventurous trail that winds through open meadows and dense alpine forests, be sure to spend time soaking up the water views. This scenic hike in Wyoming is perfect for nature lovers seeking peace and solitude. Let’s check it out:

There are plenty of hiking trails within Grand Teton National Park that will push you to your limits. Thankfully, the Moose Ponds Trail isn’t one of them. This is an easy three-mile loop trail with an elevation gain of only 150 feet. It’s ideal for anyone (like me) who wants to hike but isn’t ready for huge elevation gains and clocking several miles.

Even though this trail is rated easy, it certainly doesn’t lack adrenaline. Grand Teton National Park is renowned for its animal encounters and wildlife sightings, and this trail is no different! While this is a fairly popular trail, you’ll want to make sure you’re making noise while hiking. You never know what animals are also on the trail! Make sure you have all the proper hiking essentials with you (including bear spray) and an AllTrails account before you tackle this iconic trail in Wyoming.

What I like the most about this trek is that the trail hugs Jenny Lake for a bit. This means there will be lots of picturesque spots to sit for a spell and admire the view. It’s offensively beautiful! I'd suggest packing a snack so that you could enjoy it as you linger by this stunning lake. If you plan ahead, you could also bring your fishing gear and spend a peaceful day by the water.

Naturally, we aren’t the only ones who enjoy Jenny Lake. As the name of this trail might suggest, Moose are a fairly common sighting here. These massive creatures love to come to the water to drink and cool down, so be sure to keep your eyes open for them. Pheasants, deer, chipmunks, and foxes are other woodland critters you could see, too!

This trail is offensively beautiful in the fall, when the trees transform into vibrant autumn hues. Spring and summer are also breathtaking, and you can expect to see pretty little wildflowers dotting the edges of the trail! Of course, the area turns into a winter wonderland during the colder season, which is just as inspiring. If you’re feeling adventurous, continue around the lake. You can make your way up the west side of the lake, which leads to Cascade Canyon and the legendary Inspiration Point.

You can also keep those lakefront views going by staying at Jenny Lake Campground. Sounds like a perfect weekend in Wyoming if you ask me! Visit the Grand Teton National Park website to learn more.
