A "day trip" is a trip that takes the majority of the day. Unfortunately, depending on where you live in Wyoming, a trip down to the grocery store could technically be a "day trip." So, we’re going to be using the term a bit more loosely here, but all of the attractions and trips below are definitely worth the time required. Without much further ado, here are the 10 very best day trips in Wyoming (and/or day trips from Cheyenne) you can possibly take.
1. Cheyenne
Cheyenne is home to a variety of notable attractions. The city has an impressive collection of restaurants for its size, our historic Train Depot, the famous "big boots," and even a few museums. Regardless of what activities you’re into, you’re going to find something fun to do here on one of the best day trips in Wyoming.
2. Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Fort Laramie
Originally a 19th-century fur trading fort, and then the largest military post on the northern plains, the Fort Laramie Historical Site is a must-see for any serious history buff. The location offers a compelling look at the life of 19th-century soldiers, and helps to fill in the story of how the west was really won. This is one of the most fascinating historic places in Wyoming.
3. Yellowstone National Park
There’s so much to do at Yellowstone National Park that it can be overwhelming. If you happen to stop in be sure to check out the Grand Prismatic Spring and Old Faithful. A trip to Yellowstone is one of the best day trips in Wyoming you can take, although you will probably want to spend longer than a day here!
4. Hot Springs State Park, Thermopolis
Home to the world’s largest mineral hot spring, Hot Springs State Park is the perfect getaway for anyone who is looking for unique places to visit in Wyoming. The water in the bathhouse near the springs is said to have healing properties, reportedly soothing various aches and pains.
5. The Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Cody
At the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, visitors can see artifacts from the life of Buffalo Bill Cody, an American soldier turned folklore hero and learn about how the West was settled.
6. National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, Casper
Casper’s National Historic Trails Interpretive Center seeks to recreate the experiences of the pioneers during their trek across the country. The museum is a cool way to get a new perspective on the history of our state, and the effect we had on those who passed through.
7. Devils Tower National Monument
Aside from being one of the most unique places to visit in Wyoming due to its geological features, the Devils Tower Monument is home to more than eight miles of nature trails that visitors can hike to their heart’s content.
8. Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Lovell
One of the more scenic areas in Wyoming, the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is perfect for any nature lover. In addition to its cliffs, the area is also home to a variety of outdoor (and family-friendly) activities.
9. Wind River Heritage Center, Riverton
The Wind River Heritage Center features 40 mounts from the collection of Jake Korell (a noted Wyoming trapper) as well as a variety of antique farming equipment.
10. The National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson
One of the most unique places to visit in Wyoming is the National Museum of Wildlife Art, a true treasure located in Jackson Hole. This museum contains art concerning our country’s wildlife. It also features more than just paintings, with the museum’s Sculpture Trail being one of its highest regarded attractions.
