The Flaming Gorge In Southern Wyoming Looks Like A Landscape From Another Planet

Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, straddling the Wyoming-Utah border, offers stunning landscapes, hiking, fishing, and boating opportunities.

Wyoming is full of natural wonders, but when most people head here to explore, they end up in the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone, or out in the Badlands. Anyone who has spent a good amount of time in Wyoming knows that sometimes, the most remarkable spots are hidden off the beaten path, and the Flaming Gorge is one of those underrated gems that's sure to take your breath away.

The Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area straddles the Wyoming-Utah Border and preserves an otherworldly landscape that surrounds the mighty Green River.

Much of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir lies in Wyoming, though the Canyon and Recreation Area sprawls across the border into Utah as well. You can access the preserve from either state.

The road through the recreation area is beautiful even before you see the water, and you'll want to stop to take photos along the way.

The Green River Expedition reached the Gorge in 1869 and they were amazed at what they saw.

When the light catches the red rock just right, it's easy to see why they named this spot the Flaming Gorge!

The Gorge is a popular spot for boating and fishing. There's nothing like spending a day out on this remarkably beautiful reservoir.

Outdoor adventurers flock to the gorge for hiking and backpacking treks. Be careful, though - the Gorge is one of the only spots in Wyoming where you'll find venomous rattlesnakes.

The midget faded rattlesnake that inhabits this area is endangered, so be sure to give any snakes you encounter a wide berth and stick to trails, so you don't disturb their habitat.

Come discover a side of Wyoming that's often overlooked by hikers and campers when you visit the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area.
