Wyoming is fortunate to be home to so many breathtaking mountains. Each mountain is unique in its own right. Here is one of those epic mountains in Wyoming that earns its rank among some of the best.
Bighorn Mountains
The Bighorn Mountains are located in north-central Wyoming and are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains. This epic mountain is located between Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park.
Landscape
The area within the Bighorn Mountains consists of mountain meadows, grass prairies, evergreen forests, rugged alpine peaks, desert land, waterfalls and dramatic canyons.
Big Horn Scenic Byway
One way to enjoy the Bighorn Mountains is to take a scenic drive along the Big Horn Scenic Byway which follows Hwy 14. The byway is a 58-mile paved road that stretches over the crest of the Bighorn Mountains. This scenic drive takes you past forests, meadows, canyons and waterfalls.
Shell Falls
Shell Creek Canyon and Shell Falls provides some of the most spectacular scenery in the Bighorn Mountains. The canyon and falls are located along the western end of the Big Horn Scenic Byway. Shell Falls is a beautiful cascading waterfall with a 120' plunge.
Cloud Peak
Cloud Peak is the highest peak in the Bighorn Mountains. The peak stands at an elevation of 13,167'. Cloud Peak falls along the border between Johnson County and Big Horn County.
Maybelle Lake
Maybelle Lake is a gorgeous secluded mountain lake in the Bighorn Mountains. To reach this beautiful spot, there is a 1.6-mile hike from the Trail 79 trailhead. The lake is at the base of Bighorn Peak.
Big Horn Mountain Stream
There are some beautiful streams that flow through the Bighorn Mountains. Pictured is a stream that is part of the Tongue River drainage near Burgess Junction.
Medicine Wheel
The Bighorn Medicine Wheel is located in the Bighorn National Forest. The Medicine Wheel was used by the Crow youth for fasting and visions. They placed a buffalo skull in the center of the wheel as a prayer offering. Pictured is the 1.5-mile trail from the ranger station leading up to the Medicine Wheel. This is the largest Medicine Wheel in North America.
Recreational Opportunities
The Bighorn Mountains offer so many recreational opportunities. Some of these include camping, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, snowmobiling, skiing and picnicking.
