Anyone who has spent time exploring Wyoming knows that there are so many gorgeous trails, including waterfall trails, that it’s impossible to see them all. And when seeking waterfalls in Wyoming, there’s one hike that needs to be on your bucket list, though, and no Wyoming resident or visitor should pass it up. Today, we’re featuring the Popo Agie Falls trail near Lander, where you’ll find a natural waterslide and a beautiful swimming hole, making it one of the best hiking trails with waterfalls in Wyoming.
The hike to Popo Agie Falls near Lander is just 3.3 miles out and back, yet this trail remains one of the most underrated and under-appreciated spots in the Cowboy State - and that's a shame because it's easily one of the best waterfall hikes in Wyoming.
Even though it's a short trail, it's not an easy walk in the park. There is very little shade, and it can get downright hot in the summer.
The trail is also a bit rocky and requires some uphill hiking. With about 700 feet of elevation gain total, it's not particularly steep, but be prepared to put in some effort.
Luckily, the trail follows the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River, and that means there's a fantastic way to cool off if you get a little too warm.
The highlight of the trail is the mighty Popo Agie Falls, one of the most stunning waterfalls in Wyoming.
This tiered, cascading waterfall is particularly powerful in the spring, when the snowpack melts and sends thousands of gallons of water into the gorge near Sinks Canyon.
Once you get to the waterfall, keep walking past and soon you'll find the true hidden gem on this path - a natural waterslide that will drop you right into a gorgeous swimming hole!
Be warned, the water will be cold! No matter how hot it is outside, the Popo Agie is a chilly river. However, this cold-water dip might be just what you need after hiking for a few miles under the sun!
As far as waterfall trails go, the Popo Agie Falls trail is one of the best waterfalls hikes in Wyoming, and it’s certainly an underrated destination.
