Wisconsin’s Frozen Sea Caves Are Nothing Short Of Pure Magic

Winters in Wisconsin can be...well...freezing. Between heavy snowfall, windchill, and bone chilling temperatures, it can be all too easy to come down with a case of the winter blues. Fortunately, winter also happens to be one of the most beautiful seasons to experience here, especially near the Great Lakes. So if you're looking for a little mid-winter adventure, the Apostle Island Sea Caves are a must-visit this time of year. Here's more on this unique Wisconsin adventure:

During the winter, Lake Superior is home to exquisite ice caves found along the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Cold winds and snow transform the landscape, creating dazzling formations amidst the red sandstone cliffs.

When the conditions are right, it’s possible to tread across Lake Superior and walk right into these ice caves.

Inside the caves, a sparkling world of icicles and frozen waterfalls awaits you.

It’s not unusual for entire cliff faces to be frozen solid under inches of ice. The effect is mesmerizing, especially as they glisten in the sunlight.

As you plan your trek, be sure to wear study hiking shoes (preferable with ice cleats) as well as plenty of layers. It’s a good idea to bring ski poles as well.

As soon as you see these ice caves in person, you’ll understand why they make for such a magical winter experience.

The Apostle Islands sea caves can be accessed by means of Meyers Road, just four miles northeast of Cornucopia. Parking is typically $5 per vehicle.
