Offering Views Of Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, St. Peter’s Dome Is The Best Place To View Fall Foliage In Wisconsin

Though beautiful year-round, Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest looks especially stunning in autumn when it's drenched in vibrant foliage. And the best place to soak in the seasonal hues that fill the forest is St. Peter’s Dome, the highest point in the area. Read on to learn about the hike that’ll get you there. (It may require some effort, but the expansive views make it well worth it.)

At 1,565 feet, St. Peter’s Dome offers seemingly never-ending views of the surrounding Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

And while the vistas are impressive any time of year, they’re no doubt especially stunning in the fall.

Luckily, the 4.2-mile hike (round trip) to St. Peter’s Dome is doable for hikers of all ages and skill levels.

The trek to St. Peter’s Dome starts off as a path through a forest of mixed hardwoods.

As you make your way through the forest, you’ll cross a few bridges, which are fairly new, so they’re practically guaranteed to be in tip-top shape.

At about ½-mile into the hike, the trail splits.

Here, you’ll have the choice to continue on your trek to St. Peter’s Dome or venture to Morgan Falls, a 70-foot waterfall that cascades over several granite ledges. A stunning sight, the detour to Morgan Falls, which is less than ¼ mile from where the trail splits, is well worth it.

The trek to St. Peter’s Dome is a bit rugged, especially after the trail splits — at which point you’ll start the 500-foot climb to the top of the dome. Though the hike requires some effort, the views at the top make it completely worth it.

Despite being a bit rugged and somewhat steep, the hike to St. Peter’s Dome has been completed by everyone from kids in elementary school to older adults. Just be sure to wear the right kind of shoes and bring along some water.
