The River Pines Trail In Wisconsin That Leads You Straight To An Abandoned Summer Colony

Stevens Point in Wisconsin offers a scenic and historic hiking experience on the Green Circle Trail, especially the River Pines Trail.

Stevens Point is a city in the center of Wisconsin that’s as beautiful and historic as it is walkable. Located on the Wisconsin and Plover Rivers, the city is encircled by one of the best hikes in Wisconsin, the Green Circle Trail - a series of interconnected trail segments that travel 27 miles around the city. The trail is one of Wisconsin’s best spots for hiking and biking, and one stretch called the River Pines Trail will take you on a journey into the past.

The Green Circle Trail takes hikers and bikers through wetlands, forests; and in places, it skirts scenic river shores. It’s a beautiful and relaxing way to experience the Stevens Point Area.

On the west side of the loop, you’ll find one of the most scenic parts of the Green Circle Trail – the River Pines Trail. It’s a trail that travels through some gorgeous forest near the river.

The trail also passes some historic homes, as well as a stretch of the Wisconsin River that offers scenic views of rocky outcroppings and islands.

Just north of the Stevens Point Care Center, there’s a spot with a long and interesting history that’s called Echo Dells.

Long ago, this was an area popular for picnicking, camping, and hiking. A man named Andrew M. Nelson started a summer colony – it was a group of several cottages. His nephew George built a summer home in 1911.

In 1921 the area was preserved forever as park. The home and most of the cottages are long gone, but you can still see the remains of the colony. Look for an old foundation just off the trail. Look closer and you’ll see remains of the fireplace that was part of George’s home.
