I Paddled The Pine River In Wisconsin And Discovered Abundant Natural Beauty
Sometimes, there’s treasure hiding in plain sight. When I was a kid, I passed the Pine River more times than I can remember. The meandering river was just a couple miles down the valley from my grandparent’s Richland County farm, and while I marveled at how it overflowed its banks during spring flooding, I never considered this little river to be one of Wisconsin’s natural wonders. I recently paddled this river, as found it was just that – it’s a ticket into the beauty of the Driftless Area and it's lined with ancient sandstone bluffs. I can’t believe it took me so long to experience this place - here’s why the Pine River is a unique destination for kayaking in Wisconsin.
I started my adventure in the little Richland County town of Rockbridge.
It’s a destination in its own right, home to Pier Natural Bridge Park. The 10-acre park surrounds a half-mile finger of sandstone that forms a natural bridge. It’s incredible.
There’s a kayak launch right in the park, and plenty of parking, so it’s a good place to start a trip. It takes just a few paddle strokes to find yourself surrounded by the county’s beauty.
The Pine originates from springs, and it’s an easy trip for paddlers of all ages.
Families with young kids were navigating the river with ease.
Anyone who loves natural beauty will love this paddling trip.
The river winds through some scenic lowlands – you may see a cow – before heading past some ancient sandstone cliffs.
The river’s gentle current made paddling easy. I could sit back and admire the scenery – and take plenty of photos. I even flew a drone.
As I paddled farther, the scenery became even more dramatic.
And soon, I found myself at the road that leads to my grandparent’s old farm. I’m glad I finally discovered the natural wonder that was here all along.
Richland County isn’t as well known as some destinations, and I think that’s part of the charm. If you like discovering new places that aren’t overrun with tourists, you may want to pay the county a visit. It’s beautiful and it has some nice amenities, including an experienced river outfitter that can set you up for a paddling adventure.
