Some of the state's best sites are hiding in plain sight. That’s surely the case with Period Garden Park. Though located just three blocks from the bustling Capitol Square in downtown Madison, most don’t know it exists. However, the secret spot is worth seeking out, as it’s brimming with greenery, blooms, and old-world charm.
Period Garden Park can be found at the corner of East Gorham and North Pinckney Streets in Madison's Mansion Hill District.
The property it occupies was once the front lawn of the Elisha W. Keyes House, which is the oldest designated historic landmark in Madison.
The park is almost completely concealed by shrubbery, so it’s understandable that most passersby don’t notice it.
However, just beyond the wall of greenery lies a Victorian-era garden that gives off major Secret Garden vibes.
Enchanting right from the start, Period Garden Park is accessible via sandstone steps that date back to the 1850s.
Once inside, visitors are met with incredible beauty. Colorful annuals and perennials, along with lush hedges and trees, consume the .235-acre park.
In addition to vibrant flora and greenery, the garden boasts an old-world feel, which comes in the form of stonework structures, statuaries, and fountains.
Brick pathways make it easy to navigate Period Garden Park, while several benches provide the perfect opportunity to stop and smell the flowers.
But the most impressive thing about Period Garden Park isn’t the beauty that fills it.
Its best feature is that it’s maintained by volunteers – and it’s been that way since the garden's dedication in 1977!
