Escape To Blue Hills Felsenmeer For A Beautiful Wisconsin Nature Scene
The Blue Hills Felsenmeer in Wisconsin is a unique natural wonder formed by glacial activity, accessible only by foot.
Long ago, glaciers sculpted the landscape of Wisconsin in some remarkable ways. Across Wisconsin, you’ll find hills and valleys left behind by the ice sheets and melting glacial waters. In one remote corner of the state, there’s something that’s as unique as it is remarkable – the Blue Hills Felsenmeer. It’s an incredible site that can only be reached on foot, and it’s a Wisconsin natural wonder. Here’s what you need to know about the Blue Hills Felsenmeer.
The Blue Hills Felsenmeer is located in Rusk County, in a rugged forested area that is the remains of an ancient mountain range. The area is a bit of a hidden gem, and it’s worth seeking out if you love the outdoors. It gets it’s name from its appearance – in the early morning light, the hills take on a blueish hue.
The Blue Hills area is popular for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and ATVing. But one of the best ways to explore this wild place is on foot.
There are a lot of nice hiking options in the Blue Hills, but one of the best trails will take you to the felsenmeer. You can access it from a four-mile hike that partially follows an ATV trail
The geologic feature means “Sea of rocks in German,” and it makes sense when you arrive at the felsenmeer. Rocks fill a huge gorge that’s 82-feet deep and a thousand feet long.
The canyon was formed long ago by glacial melt. Quartzite rocks shattered over the years, filling the canyon, and creating this incredible place.
The felsenmeer is a very unique and important natural site, so no vehicles are allowed, and visitors should take care not to disturb the felsenmeer. Only take pictures!
